Supervisors described monitoring as a staff that is routine; “we send employees for an irregular foundation in to the playroom every 20 mins, every 40 mins, every hour” (M: 6BA). Staff approaches to intervening in danger behavior varied. Some had been permissive: “I remind them there are wellness division laws that people’re obliged to enforce my rule is you can break free with any such thing if you’re discreet, however, if we see it, then there is an issue” (S: 2BA). Other people had been direct, as an example a patron described an encounter he seen in the club: “a monitor stated, ‘You place the condom on or have the hell out’ … he had been respectful but he wasn’t going to just take no shit” (P4:3BA). Monitors indicated misgivings over their part, beyond maybe not attempting to police their groups. One staff user described intervening as a balancing act that is delicate

I try to do it in such a way that it doesn’t shame or humiliate the person I’m talking to, particularly if it has to do around safer sex issues… I think people understand that I’m trying … to fulfill the responsibilities that I have to the owners of the club and that they have to the Department of Public Health, and maybe to the larger society as a whole, but at the same time, be an advocate for gay men when I take care of a problem.
